The town of Madoc, in the township of the same name, the centre of a prosperousfarming community, was the site of a pioneer iron industry, a small furnace, built in1S37, being operated for eight or nine years, using wood and charcoal as fuel. The ironore was obtained from the Seymour mine, distant about three miles north of the the year 1866 the town witnessed great mining excitement, caused by the discoveryof a pocket of rich gold ore at a point, afterwards known as Eldorado, about eight milesdistant. There was scarcely a lot or homestead in the immediately surrounding countryon which pits or shafts were not sunk.
