Lieutenant General Ulysses S. Grant, in subdued color.

This historic black and white image of Lieutenant General Ulysses S. Grant was enhanced with just enough color to help capture what Grant may have looked like today at the height of the Civil War. Grant had chestnut brown hair and dark gray eyes, both of which were added to this photograph. The Lt. General straps and buttons closely matches the color of those on uniforms in museums. A combination of colors, including flesh tones, reds and dark browns were added to his facial features to accentuate the furrowed brow that so many people talked about when they said he wore an "expression as if he had determined to drive his head through a brick wall, and was about to do it." This photograph was taken at about the time Grant received his promotion to Lt. General in March of 1864.
