Male breast. Profile view of an enlarged breast on a 71 year old man. Enlargement of the breasts in men is known as gynaecomastia. It is usually due to abnormally high levels of the female hormone oestrogen in the blood. This can be caused by liver cirrhosis (in which the liver cannot break down the natural oestrogen present), testicular cancer, or some drugs. If only one breast is affected, it may be caused by breast cancer. Treatment depends on the underlying cause. The swelling often subsides naturally, although breast reduction surgery can also be performed.
