The image is of the war memorial at the privately owned Truner Hut mountain refuge located in the Gschnitztal valley above the village of Trins in the Stubai Alps of the Austrian Tirol. The Truner Hut is one of several huts on the Gschnitztal Runde Tour long distance walking tour. For more information about the Truner Hut and other huts on the Gschnitztal Runde Tour see my guidebook Trekking in the Stubai Alps published by Cicerone Press. The memorial records the loss of the American Airforce crew of a B24 heavy bomber that was shot out of the sky in April 1945, one month before the end of the Second World War. Debris of the plane was scattered far and wide and apart from what is recorded here, lots of debris fell on the Ubeltal glacier some of which was recovered many years later by the guardian at the Teplitzer Hut in the Sud Tirol who recovered one of the planes 50cal machine guns. See Teplitzer Hut photos.
