The same may besaid of the inscription on No. 3563. ti-u-ti-re-re. It is otherwise with a whorl bearingthe inscription given below, and foundat a depth of 20 ft. (No. 1525 ;No. 1222, p. 563). Here the straightline clearly denotes the end of theword, words being similarly dividedfrom one another in the Karian in-scriptions, as well as in the inscriptioncopied by Hamilton at Eyiik. I cansuggest no explanation of the firstcharacter on the left; the next is theCypriote mo, the next ye; then comesa letter the phonetic power of which in Cypriote has not yet been asce -tained ; then another unknown charac-. It is possible, however, that thestraight line which I have supposedto be a mark of division may really be-long to the lines adjoining it; in thiscase we should have the Cypriote cha-racter vo. This possibility is suggestedby a whorl, found at a depth of 13 ft.,which contains the following inscrip- »- ©r^ CDiN rk\ No. 1526. Inscription on whorl, No. 1860. Here tlie second character is the Cy-priote si {^^p\), the third is mo, thefourth u, and the last vo. It is a pitythat the value of the first remains un-known, since we seem to have in si-mo-ti-vo the same root as in Simoeis ( = XlfM0-F€VT-<;). There are four other whorls aboutwhich I am in do
