The inserted map, Germany at the Death of EmperorCharles IV, 1378, gives a picture of the multiplicity of divisions in the empire,although it is very difficult to give accurately the boundaries of every petty terri-tory at any fixed epoch. The index accompanying the map is especially useful inillustrating the endless subdivisions of the empire. The constitutional nature of the Territories was strengthened from anotherside. The partition of inheritances, which created petty dominions, was not favour-able to the formation of important Territories.
