Alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma cancer cells, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). This cancer arises from primitive skeletal muscle cells (rhabdomyoblasts). It is most common in older children and adolescents. Tumours cause painless masses under the skin, most often on the larger muscles of the trunk, arms and legs. Treatment is with chemotherapy, often combined with surgical removal of the tumour and radiotherapy. Magnification: x660 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
