WASHINGTON DC, United States — Kwanzan cherry trees display their vibrant, double-flowering blossoms near the Tidal Basin in Washington DC. These late-blooming cherry trees, known for their deep pink, multi-layered flowers, complement the earlier-blooming Yoshino cherries, extending the city's famous cherry blossom season.

Kwanzan cherries, also known as Kanzan, are celebrated for their ornate, double-flowering blossoms that typically appear in mid to late April, about two weeks after the more numerous Yoshino cherries reach peak bloom. Each Kwanzan blossom features 30 to 50 pink petals, creating a carnation-like appearance that is both striking and delicate. These trees, which can grow up to 25-30 feet tall, were part of the original gift from Japan in 1912, though they are less numerous around the Tidal Basin than the Yoshino cherries. Kwanzan cherries are primarily found in East Potomac Park and Hains Point, adding diversity to Washington's cherry blossom display. Their later blooming period extends the National Cherry Blossom Festival's visual appeal, typically occurring as the Yoshino petals begin to fall. This variety does not produce fruit, focusing all its energy on its spectacular floral display. The Kwanzan cherry's vivid pink blossoms provide a different aesthetic from the pale pink Yoshino cherries, offering visitors and photographers another dimension of Washington's renowned spring beauty.
