Molluscum contagiosum. Pus-filled lesions on the skin of a nine-year-old girl caused by a molluscum contagiosum poxvirus infection. The pus results from a secondary bacterial infection. Molluscum contagiosum, which is usually harmless, affects children more commonly than adults. The raised areas (papules) produce a cheesy fluid and a crust forms before healing occurs. The condition usually clears up in a few months but may require medical treatment in extreme cases. The disease is highly contagious through skin contact with the affected area.
