Installing The Batteries. These Coast Guardsmen are installing the storage batteries in a radio-beacon lighted bell buoy, located in Long island Sound, New York. The Coast Guard Engineers have developed this type of buoy to circumvent the dangers of fog, or mechanical failure of the light or bell. The buoy transmits a radio impulse to the ship, making it possible to navigate safely even when nothing can be seen.
