(Goldschneider.) FRACTURES OF THE VERTEBRAL COLUMN. 119 Even in milder cases, in which there is no injury ofthe cord, such as contusion or ecchymosis near the nervesthat make their exit from the vertebral canal, the treat-ment should be carried outwith the minutest care. Tobring about bony union ofthe fragments and avoidsecondary displacement re-quires a long period ofrest in the proper postureand the wearing of well-fitting supportive apparatusfor an indefinite time after-ward. The strain on thebody of the vertebra in the erect posture and in doingwork is enormous, while the formation of new bone is notvery abundant. We know from recently reported cases.
