On the following day, Parnell and his friendswere put in high glee by the result of evidencegiven before the Commission by Soames* attor-ney and MacDonald, tlie manager of the Times,It was generally acknowledged that such an ex-posure of imbecility and recklessness on the partof men controlling the greatest newspaper wasrarely before seen. MacDonald confessed thatwhen he published the forged letter he had takenno means whatever to examine its authenticitybeyond a reference to one handwriting had never asked for information, had noteven asked the name of the recipient of the letter.*He did not know, and did not ask for months.
