Horse fairs have been held in the town , high in the Pennine hills of northern England since 1685. For members of the gypsy and traveller communities it is an opportunity buy and sell horses and to meet old friends, but the event has increasingly gained a reputation for the danger caused to pedestrians and horses as they are driven at speed along a narrow lanes in and around the town.
