A native, and also one of the most desir- able; of dense growth when young, and if not crowded will retain its lower branches for many vears. The foliage is of a most pleasing, light silvery green, moderately dense, and very soft to the touch. As an ornamental tree it is unsurpassed in many ways, while for timber it is of the greatest value. Used as a screen, large hedge, or even as a street shade-tree, it is well adapted, and gives quick results. 50 cents. P. sylvestris. [Scotch Pine, or Scotch Fir.] Med. A broadly, pyramidal tree of dense growth. Will stand the greatest amount of exposure and wind, and grow on the poorest soils. Good for planting near the sea-shore where temporary belts are desirable, but is not long lived, and does not keep symmetrical for a length of time in that locality. Foliage luxuriant and of a pleasing bluish shade. 50 cents. ^, k.'-. P- sylvestris var. globosa. [Dw arf Scotch Tine.] Sm. A dwarf, globular form, useful for lawn planting. $ PSEUDO-TSUGA — Douglass Spruce. P. Douglassi. Lg. One of the most elegant of the Kocky Mountain trees, where it forms im- mense forests. When mature, its bark is deep red, exceedingly thick, and deeply furrowed, and the foliage is of a brilliant pea-green color, and very soft to the touch, while the branches assume a partially pendulous habit, giving a very beau tifu effect to the whole.
