In his earlyyouth he secured employment at theRisdon Iron Works, where he learnedthe steamfitters trade. In 1896. nine-teen years of age. he enlisted in thecause of Organized Labor, in behalf ofwhich he has ever since been has represented the Steam Fitters San Francisco organization atthree International conventions, the State Federation of Labor in 1902,and in 1907 was elected as the delegate to represent the San FranciscoLabor Council at the convention of the American Federation of Labora
