Southerscales limestone pavement, North Yorkshire, UK
lLmestone pavements are formed when advancing glaciers scrape away overburden, exposing horizontally-bedded limestone; subsequent glacial retreat leaves behind a flat, bare surface. Limestone is slightly soluble in water, so corrosive drainage along joints and cracks produce slabs called "clints" isolated by deep fissures called "grikes"
