Point-of-care diagnostics, IBM research. Microchip used for diagnostics ('lab on a chip') as developed by IBM scientists Luc Gervais and Emmanuel Delamarche at IBM Research-Zurich, Switzerland. This system can test for many diseases, including cardiovascular disease. The microchip measures 1 by 5 centimetres. This capillary pump, with a depth of 180 micrometres, has an intricate set of microstructures to pump the sample through the device. Photographed in September 2009.
