The countryside in the valley of the River Gara near Blackawton in the South Hams district of Devon. The area is popular with hikers and walkers. The river is quite short, about 7 miles. It rises near Halwell to the NE of Blackawton and flows to meet the sea at Slapton Ley. There are a number of old mills and mill sites along its course, some of which are now holiday of the time the river flows through woodland or lush green pasture.
