Alopecia, or hair loss, due to hypothyroidism in a 38 year old woman. Hypothyroidism is the underactivity of the thyroid, an endocrine (hormone) gland in the neck that produces hormones that control the body's metabolism. Other symptoms include mental and physical slowing, sensitivity to cold and weight gain. Hypothyroidism may be caused by an auto-immune disease that attacks the thyroid gland or surgical removal of the gland. Treatment is with the synthetic thyroid hormone levothyroxine.
