Dying hosta (Hosta sp.) leaf. Close-up of a leaf from a hosta plant, showing the onset of decay which commences during early autumn. The change in colour from green to yellow to brown, and eventually colourless, is quite prominent and occurs while the leaves remain on this broad-leaf plant. It is due to a reduction, and eventually cessation, in the amount of chlorophyll produced during the growth cycle.
