Theremainder of the earthly lives of the parents wasspent in this State, the father d^dng in Lawrence,VanBuren County, in 1856, and the mother breath-ing her last at the home of our subject in JacksonCounty,many years later, and being buried in Law-rence. Their family was made up of six sons andtwo daughters. Philander was nineteen years old whenhe came to Michigan. He had attended the publicschool ill New York and an Academy at Westfieldand had taught one term of school there. At theage of eighteen he began the trade of a harness-maker with his uncle in Earlville, Madison County,uitli whom he had worked a few months. Afterarriving in Michigan he went to Ann Arbor where.
