COLONEL ABRAM DURYI^E, Colonel Abram DuryeE, late commander of the SeventhRegiment, National Guard, was born in the city of New York in1815. He descended from a French Huguenot family, who cameto America on the revocation of the Edict of Nantes by LouisXIV. of France, in 16S5. He engaged in mercantile business in New York, in whichpursuit he met with honorable success and realized a fortune. He commenced his military career, at the early age of eighteenyears, as a private in the One Hundred and Forty-second Miiitia,and subsequently served in the ranks of one of the companies of theNational Guard—then Twenty-seventh Regiment—September,1838; and after passing through all the different grades of thenon-commissioned officers with distinction, he obtauied a SecondL
