Moire effect. View of a Moire pattern on a piece of fabric. This is an interference pattern formed by superimposing two regular sets of lines on one another at certain angles. In this image the two sets of lines are two layers of a fabric. The effect can be used to test material surface regularity. A sheet of glass etched with regular parallel lines is placed in front of the specimen. A shadow of this reference grating is cast onto the specimen by a beam of light projected from a 45 degree angle. Any warping of the specimen's surface will result in Moire Fringes appearing due to the interference pattern between the reference and shadow grating.
