Experienceshows that such a conception, unless handled in a boldand masterly way, is bound to fail from lack of that unitywhich is needful in any perfected work of art ; but SirEdwin has essayed a tour de force, and has achieved it. Marshcourt stands on the spur of a hill which overhangsthe river Test, where it wanders past Stockbridge. Itlooks across the reedy water-meadows that fringe the river,dotted with large silvery willows.
