He worked for the Marine Aviation Service (MLD, part of the Royal Navy) in 1964 and was stationed in Malta. Van Eijck was a flight engineer with the ambition to become a pilot, but he did not pass the inspection. Out of pure frustration and perhaps to prove that he could fly, he stepped on a two-engine Grumman S-2 Tracker (a patrol aircraft) on 7 March and flew south. He initially planned to seek political asylum in Egypt, but he did not have enough fuel on board to reach Alexandria. And so it became Libya. Van Eijck made a nice landing at an airport near Benghazi and got permission from the Libyans to stay. But after a year the political refugee wanted to return to the Netherlands and accepted the imprisonment of one year (source: ) Date: 10 april 1964 Location: Badhoevedorp Keywords: families, pilots
