Mandatory credit Sir Harold Jeffreys (1891-1989), British astronomer, mathematician and geophysicist. Jeffreys contributions to geophysics included the suggestion that the Earth's core is liquid. He was awarded the Gold Medal of the Royal Astronomical Society (1937), and also served as the society's President. He was Plumian Professor at the University of Cambridge (1946-1958), and received the Royal Society's Royal Medal (1948) and Copley Medal (1960).
