A gamekeeper is a person who looks after an area of countryside to make sure there is enough game for hunting, and or fish for angling, and who actively manages areas of woodland, waterway, farmland etc for game birds/animals. The gamekeeper is employed by a landowner, and often in the UK by a country estate, to prevent poaching on his lands, rear and release game birds, control predators, manage habitats to suit game, and monitor its health. The duties of the gamekeeper revolve around the management of animals, the moorland gamekeeper must focus a lot of time on his heather ‘crop’ because the heather provides food and shelter for the red grouse, Scotland’s most important and celebrated game bird. This grouse provides great sport for the guns on the Glorious Twelfth (of August) when the grouse-shooting season opens The ultimate aim of heather management is to create a mosaic of longer, unburnt heather, and recently burnt areas of regenerating heather.
