Traditional house in Cordoba, Spain with decorative balcony as part of Los Patios Festival
The layout of the historic centre of Cordoba, Spain remains much as it did in Moorish times with whitewashed houses giving on to narrow, winding ways. Nearly every house has its own inner courtyard (patio) and fountain, not normally open to the public. In the first half of May, hundreds of owners compete with their neighbours for the best floral display, and the patios are open to all. Those without patios decorate their balconies with brighly coloured plants. This festival traces its roots in 1918 to honor the locals’ efforts to retain and maintain these traditional areas in the home. The festival is hugely popular with tourists not only from Spain but from around the world.
