It has beenlighted with gas since 1830 ; and in December 1876 anew water-supply was introduced from two storing pondsat Clatto and Skelpie, about 4| miles SSW of the ToAvn Hallstands at the junc-tion of St CatherineStreet and Cross-gate, and is a plain,neatstructure, sur-mounted by a cupolaand belfry. TheCounty Buildings,in St CatherineStreet, were en-larged in 183C andagain in 1872, pre-sent a neat thoughplain facade, andcontain the countyhall, the sheritTcourt - room, andoffices for the publicportrait of John, Earlvery valuable por-. In the county hall are aof Hopetoun, by Sir Henry Raeburntrait of Lord Kellie in his official robes, by Sir DavidWilkie ; portraits of George II., George III., and QueenCharlotte, by Ramsay, son of the Gentle Shepherd;besides a copy of a good portrait of Lord Elgin, Viceroyof India, and marble busts of his lordship and of thelate J. H. E. Wemyss of Wemyss and Torrie, old county prison, on the S side of the Eden, nowserves as the Fife Artillery Militia storehouse. The newprison occupies a conspicuous site a little to the NE of thetown, and built, at a cost of over £3000, on a greatlyimproved plan, is now under Government management,and has accommodation for 33 male and 13 femaleprisoners. Opposite the Town Hall stood an ancientcross, which, comprising an octagonal base and a roundpillar surmounted by a unicorn, was taken down in1817. Its pillar
