Consisting of a slide for the chain on a bobbin and continuing through the starboard vault hole, and a heavy devil's claw hanging on a bobbin on the ship's wall, the claw is assembled like a pair of scissors with a screw with two threads through the legs, with which the distance between the legs can be adjusted. A bracket over the chain secures the claw against the upright side of the spool, the bracket is secured with a fork, which is lashed to the deck beam by a hoist.
