Japan and Korea, satellite image. North is at top. Japan (right) is an archipelago of islands in the northern Pacific Ocean. Japan's capital city, Tokyo (grey, right centre), is situated on Japan's main island, Honshu. Japan's second largest island, Hokkaido, lies to the north of Honshu. Korea is divided politically into north and south. It is separated from Japan by the Sea of Japan. South Korea makes up the southern half of the peninsular with its capital, Seoul, in the northwest of the country (grey, right centre). North Korea extends north from the peninsular to border with China. Its capital city is Pyongyang in the west of the country (grey, right centre).
