Ripon Cathedral seen over the River Ure, Ripon, North Yorkshire, England, UK.

St Wilfred built the first church here circa 670 and between 681 and 686. Ripon was a bishop's see. It became a cathedral again in 1836. Only the crypt survives from the original Saxon church, the building being destroyed by both the Danes and Normans. The present building was commenced by Archbishop Roger of York in the 12th century and was successively added to over the years with the result that architectural styles vary from Saxon to Perpendicular. paul ridsdale
