Du-vant saw^ not only the struggle between the armies,but he saw the struggle for life made by more thanforty thousand men who fell on that bloody field,and as the battle raged on, surging back and forthover their wounded and agonized bodies, withgaping wounds and blistering lips and parchedthroats, were left to die without friend or love ornurse or doctor. As Duvant went on to the field,ministering to friend and foe alike, there was bornin his consciousness a great vision of mercy, whichshould know no bounds until it claimed every man,woman and child on the earth for its friend.
