Barnum of Bridge-port, Stratfords neighboringcity, once endeavored to pur-chase Shakespeares birthplaceto exhibit at his circuses inthis country, while at anothertime some German professorsasked permission to examineShakespeares brain to deter-mine whether its size wasin proportion to his last request was madein spite of the fact that the poet himself is said to have requested that this verseshould be cut on his tombstone:— Good frend for Jesus sake forbeare,To digg the dust encloased heare:Bleste be y*^ man y spares thes stones,And curst be he y*^ moves my bones. The Connecticut town is mindful of the fact that it is named for William Shake-speares home across the seas and, in his memory and as a further recognition ofthe common literature and heritage of the two countries, the donor of the Stratford. It was dedi-cated in 1887, the jubilee year of Queen Victoria, the principalspeech being made by Henry Irving.
