Inscriptions: City mark on lower guard, right: [fleur-de-lys] Inscriptions: weaver mark on right guard, bottom: R During their search for Rinaldo in the gardens of Armida, Carlo & Ubaldo encounter 2 sirens bathing in fountain; Ubaldo holds his wand over heads of sirens as Carlo raises the diamond shield in defense against their charms (BRD) rinceau ornament; (UPR BRD) centered by classical figure carrying torch in strapwork cartouche supported by putti holding palm fronds & branches of oak & laurel (allusion to Honor); (LWR BRD) centered by reclining soldier in strapwork cartouche flanked by pair of rams heads & pair of putti holding ribbon terminals of festoon, headed by helmet & 4 banners; (L & R BRD) cameo in strapwork cartouche with putto perched on top at mid-point; strapwork cartouches with female figures holding fanfare trumpets in upper corners (allusion to Fame); strapwork cartouches with pairs of satyrs in lower corners Ten panels in set. The initial "R" in the guard of most of the pieces in the set indicates that they may have been woven at the atelier of Raphael de la Planche at the Atelier du faubourg Saint-Marcel or the Atelier du Louvre.
