BISSELL, Lorenzo.—Descended from Frenchancestry, the Bissell family became identifiedwith the history of the new world during thecolonial period, and some of the name wereearly settlers of Connecticut. Across the riverfrom Ogdensburg. N. and in cose proximityto Brockville. Ontario, Canada, stood thehome of the Bissell family, they having removedthither from New England. However, the Can-adian location was not entirely satisfactory, andthe father visited Illinois on a tour of Inspec-tion. Shortly after his return to Canada he wastaken ill and soon died. At that time Lorenzo,who ?^^?as born near Brockville August 2(3, a youth of sixteen years, and his assistance. H [STORY OF OGLE COUNTY. was of the greatest benefit to his widowedmother, whose eldest sons already had startedout to earn their way in the world. Shortly after the fathers death the familycame to Illinois and joined the Martin, Farwelland Woods families, all of whom were widow sec-ured land which had been en-tered by Jlr. Rowe from the Government. Onthe place stood a cabin built about 1836, and thisbecame the home of the family in 1846. Themothers life was one of self-sacrificing devotionto her church and her children, and at her deathin , at the age of eighty-seven years, shewas mourned by those to whom her beautifulcharacter had endeared her. During early daysshe always kept a light burning all night in awindow of her cabin, which stood on a hill, sothat the light could be seen for miles, enablingstrangers to find their way through storms anddarkness. Near by stood a church founded bythe Rowe and JIartin fauiilies. and to this wasgi
