The memorial (legible in photograph) reads: 'IN MEMORY OF / JOHN WILLIAM / ELDEST SON OF JOHN MURTON / OF COOLING CASTLE, / WHO ON HIS PASSAGE TO CALCUTTA / IN THE SHIP "MONARCH", / FELL OVERBOARD AND WAS DROWNED / WHEN OFF RIO DE JANEIRO, / IN THE EVENING 22ND SEPTEMBER 1852, / IN THE 28TH YEAR OF HIS AGE. / "AND SO PERISHED / "ONE OF THE FINEST AND / "BEST HEARTED SEAMEN / "WHO EVER TROD A SHIP'S DECK . . .
