The Battle of Oriskany was fought on August 6, 1777. Part of the Saratoga Campaign during the American Revolution, it was one of the bloodiest battles. The Patriot forces were led by General Nicolas Herkimer, who died as a result of wounds received in this battle. Fighting for the Patriots and with Herkimer's forces was a party of Oneida Indians.
