Phial of a DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) vaccine against the Zika virus that was undergoing clinical trials in 2016. The Zika virus is transmitted to humans via the bite of an infected mosquito and causes zika fever. In 2015 a previously unknown connection between Zika infection in pregnant women and microcephaly (small head) in newborns was reported. Photographed at the NIAID Vaccine Research Center’s Pilot Plant in Frederick, Maryland, USA, in August 2016.
