Embryonic development. Historical artwork showing two stages in the embryonic development of a dog (left) and a human (right). This illustration by Ernst Haeckel incorrectly shows similarities between the embryos, as evidence that humans share a common ancestry with dogs and other animals (the biogenetic law). In fact, the embryos show greater differences than appear in his diagram, and some of the drawings were deliberately faked to support the theory.
