Returning from the scenes of conflict, he entered the service ofthe Fitchburg Railroad Company, and passing throughthe different grades, soon reached the position of loco-motive engineer, serving on express passenger trainsseveral years, jirincipally on the Hoosac Tunnel routeto the West. Though not an orator, his sound common-sense made him popular with his craft, and he was thriceelected to the office of chief engineer of the Bostondivision of the Brotherhood of Locomotixe Engineers,. EVERETT A. STEVENS. representing the division in several of thenational con-ventions of the organization, and being twice honoredby election to office there. In 1883, he was nominatedby (lovernor Butler as a member of the Board of Rail-road Commissioners, receiving the unanimous endorse-ment of the Executive Council. In 1S86, he wasnominated by Governor Robinson, again in 1889 byGovernor .\mes, and yet again in 1892 by GovernorRussell, receiving the unanimous vote of approval of the councillors. Heis active in the GrandArmy of the Repub-lic, having beenelected two terms ascommander of PostII, of Charlestown,making the tour ofthe Pacific at its headin 1886.
