She came to America withher sister and brother-in-law, George settled at Bay City in 1852 and in the fol-lowing year she was married to Eustace Sert,who was a miller by trade. After four yearsat this business in Bay City, Mr. Sert built thehotel at Sebewaing, Michigan, long known asthe Sert House. Mr. Sert died November 8,1872, and Mrs. Sert continued to manage thehotel until her marriage with Mr. Heinzmann had three children born toher first union, namely: Louisa, who marriedSimon Hoffman and died six months later;. ^ (^.a^ AND REPRESENTATIVE CITIZENS. 471 Alargareta, who married Myron Tuttle anddied September i. 1901 ; and Eustace, whodied aged eight months. Mrs. Heinzmann is avery highly esteemed lady. She is very charit-able and is one of the charter members of theBay City German Lutheran Church. EV. THOMAS RAFTER, whose por-trait accompanies this sketch, hasbeen pastor of St. James CatholicChurch, of Bay City, Michigan, fora period of 32 years and is a man dearly be-loved by his congregation, among whom hehas labored so faithfully. It was under hisdirection that the handsome church edifice waserected and it was under his guidance that thecongregation has grown to its present largeproportions. Father Rafter was born in Monroe County,Michigan, in 1846, and is a son of WilliamRafter, a pioneer of this State; both of hisparents are now deceased. His educationaltraining was received at Montreal College, andat Louvain University, Belgiu
