The chapel at the top of the Puig de Maria dates from 1355 and was built as a plea for protection from the Black Death which was sweeping across Europe. It killed about 20% of the population of Mallorca. It became a monastery in 1371. Year later the wall and defence tower were added. The monestary closed between 1564 and It underwent a thorough refurbishment in the 18th century and in the late 19th century it reverted to its original style. It has been occupied by a number of religious orders. Today there are 12 rooms available for overnight stays by visitors. The puig makes a pleasant hike up from Pollenca and provides excellent views.
