Timothy Peake (born 1972). Portrait of the British and European Space Agency (ESA) astronaut Timothy Nigel Peake. Peake served in the British Army from 1992 to 2009. In 2009 he was a successful applicant for one of only six places on ESA's astronaut training programme. He graduated in November 2010, making him the first British citizen to be selected as an astronaut by ESA. Previous British astronauts in space have had US citizenship or flown privately. He is scheduled to join Expedition 46 to the International Space Station (ISS), launching in November or December 2015.
