Fifth disease. Red rash on a five-year-old girl's cheeks due to fifth disease, a contagious disease caused by parvovirus B19. Fifth disease is also known as 'slapped cheek' disease or erythema infectiosum. It affects children between the ages of five and 15, and outbreaks tend to appear in late winter and early spring. Symptoms of a spreading rash and a mild fever appear after an incubation period of four to 28 days. Adults rarely contract the disease and may suffer joint pain. The rash lasts from one to three weeks and treatment consists of bed rest.
