Inside view of Bourtzi castle upon a tiny island, with Nafplio town and Palamidi castle in the background, Greece
Inside view of Bourtzi (or "Bourdzi") castle upon a tiny island named Aghioi Theodoroi at the entrance of the port of Nafplio town, with Nafplio and Palamidi castle in the background. Argolis, Argolic gulf, Greece. Nafplio is one the most beautiful Greek towns (especially the old part)and it was the first capital of the country after the liberation from the Ottoman Empire. You can see the wonderful old buildings, narrow alleys, the Syntagma (constitution) square, even the place where the first Greek governor, Ioannis Kapodistrias was murdered by his political rivals (you can even see the holes of the bullets on the walls). Nafplio is also famous for its 3 castles. The one, "Bourtzi" is built upon a rock in the sea, defending the entrance of the harbor. The second is "Akronafplia" (you can see a small part of its walls in the middle-left part of the picture. Without doubt the most impressive is "Palamidi", that stands like a sleepless guard, on a hill above the town. If you want to go there by feet, you 'll have to "climb", 999 stairs. If a "lazy" one, you can also go by car. The view of the town, and the whole Argolic gulf is at least compensative. Only one and a half hour from Athens.
