Mal'ta genetic lineage, world map. Many human populations carry genetic markers which can be traced back through generations. This can produce a genetic tree and the diverse branches can be followed back to a common root. This map shows the genetics of the Ancient North Eurasian (ANE) population, thought to be ancestral to the Mal'ta-Buret' culture that existed during the Upper Paleolithic, around 24,000 to 15,000 years ago. The colour-coded key (lower left) shows the variation in genetic lineage as populations migrated across Eurasia and into the Americas. For this illustration with labels, see image C047/5355.
