Soon Woodsmen gained the summitof Bald Knob—the grand object of the magnificent wild cheer of victory rose from our brave men as theypaused on the crest of the hill, in full view of MissionaryRidge. Musketry ceased, except some occasional ax and the spade were soon busily engaged, securingwhat we had gained. The rebels continued a heavy fire ofartillery from the Ridge, at Bald Knob, until after dark, butlittle injury was done by them. Quite a number of menwere wounded and some killed by the musketry. All thesewere of Woods Division, except four from the 40th GEN. P. H. SHERIDAN. FIFTY-EIGHTH INDIANA REGIMENT. 215 A large number of prisoners were captured, including almostan entire Florida Regiment. Thus glorious was fought andwon the battle of Chattanooga Yalley. Amongst the greatbattles of the war it is not to be named, but it stands high inthe catalogue of minor contests. It has a sublimity notattached to many greater battles. It was well planned anddaringly executed. Every patriots heart in the valley beatshigh with exultation to-night, but terrors disturb the rebelsbroken slumber. After dark I return to camp. None ofthe 58th were hurt, but they remained on the field. Tuesday, November 24.—I rose long before day, antici-pating a renewal of the contest at dawn. Day dawned as Iwas riding out to the held.
