John Martin Schaeberle (1853-1924), German-US astronomer. Born in Germany, Schaeberle was brought up in the USA. He studied mathematics at Ann Arbor university, Chicago, where he began to make his own telescopes. Using these, he discovered a comet in 1880, and another in 1881. From 1888 he worked at the Lick Observatory. He made an expedition in 1889 to South America to observe a total solar eclipse. During another eclipse, in Chile in 1893, he made pioneering photographs of the Sun's corona, among the best to have been made at the time. Craters are named after him on the Moon and Mars.
