Bicycle taxis waiting for customers and illegally imported goods from Mexico in Tecun Uman, Guatemala on the Suchiate River.
By entering Mexico illegally at the Guatemalan border, many Central Americans and other migrants from countries across the globe, begin their increasingly dangerous odyssey northward, through the country in search of work and a better life in the United States. The Suchiate River divides the town of Tecún Umán, Guatemala and Ciudad Hidalgo, Chiapas, Mexico. With no migratory or commercial controls, the river serves as a well-traveled, illegal crossing point between the two countries --- soft drinks, toilet paper, processed foods going south to Guatemala; fruits, vegetables, migrants and arms going north into Mexico. View on the Guatemalan side of the river looking towards Mexico, with bicycle taxis waiting to haul merchandise into Tecún Umán.
